They won the 1993 Juno Award for Hard Rock Album of the Year. Both the EP and full-length album were produced by Paul Gross and co-produced by Anthony Vanderburgh and recorded at Toronto's world class facility studio Phase One. This was followed in 1992 by the full album Doin' the Nasty. Capitol Records (EMI) signed the band in 1991 and issued an EP, 'Smooth And Deadly'. Portrait consisted of original members singer/guitarist Nick Walsh, drummer Kevin Harrison, guitarist Kevin Gale and bassist/ lyricist Dave Mercel. Slik Toxik was formed in 1988 out of Toronto hard rock band Portrait. FIRST TIME REISSUED - NEWLY MASTERED - FULL BOOKLET - 3 BONUS TRACKS. Slik Toxik is a band that may have never rose above the horizon to make their presence known but Doin' the Nasty serves as a reminder that some of the greatest albums ever made are the ones you never even knew existed. The production is perfect, the band plays absolutely amazing, and the songs are so well thought out, well written, and perfectly executed. 20+ years later, Doin' the Nasty is an album that is still a fucking blast to listen to. That band was Slik Toxik and the album was 'Doin the Nasty'. Of those acts, one band and their debut album rose above them all to really blow our mind. As a matter of fact, bands like Tora Tora, War Babies, and Babylon AD were doing this stuff as good if not better than many of their peers. While this was true, it definitely didn't mean that these bands weren't any good. It was also a bad time for new bands of the genre who were coming out. The landscape was changing and bands such as Warrant, Poison, and Skid Row who all at one time were selling out arenas and amphitheaters found themselves playing to 1/2 full venues and in some cases reduced to playing half full clubs. Heading into the 90's, the waters were a bit rocky for the hard rock/metal world. The "White Lies/Black Truth" video won the People's Choice Award for 'Best Video Of The Year' and "Helluvatime" took home the 'Best Metal Video Award' at the 1992 MuchMusic Video Awards. Karen serves as the Secretary of ATA’s Board of Directors and is a member of the Colorado Translators Association. This chapter first argues that boundaries between translated and non-translated language and between writing or translating and revising are indeterminate. She has worked as a research and development chemist in Europe and as a Quality Assurance Manager in a cosmetic and medical device manufacturer. Karen earned a Master of Chemistry with French degree from the University of Manchester and a Diploma in French and a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Cambridge. She is an ATA-certified French>English translator and a Fellow of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting. Karen Tkaczyk is a chemist-turned freelance translator, specializing in scientific translation. So yes, I am diversified, yet I am still a highly specialized subject-matter expert. Both may give you insights into ways we freelancers diversify and how those diversified service offerings help in difficult seasons or times of change. I discussed it in the Speaking of Translation podcast here. Multilingual Magazine’s Summer Series included this panel on Diversification. Indeed, because my success with diversification made a big difference to my year and I shared as much when people asked how things were going, there are a couple of recordings where I spoke about this topic later in the year. My editing revenue was slightly up last year on any of the previous years, and it made up a much higher percentage of my total revenue as my translation revenue took a steep dive in Q2 and Q3. I suspected that academics who couldn’t get into the lab or the field finished off half-written papers instead, though I don’t have anything to support that hunch. So what difference did offering this specialized yet diversified service make to me in 2020? Put simply, the editing work held strong and kept me going through many bad months. In reflecting on what changed due to the pandemic, I reviewed it and found that much still holds. You can find that piece on the Training for Translators blog. In February 2017 I wrote in more depth about this topic, including describing how others can get into this field. It improves both my subject-matter expertise, since I read cutting-edge research while editing these papers, and my English writing skills. Importantly, I have always felt that this area of work improved my translations. In recent years the volume rose to make up about 20% of my gross revenue-a significant part of what I do. Then I prepared a talk on the topic and it became obvious that other into-English translators were interested in adding this to their skill set. Around that time, 2015 or thereabouts, I added it to the list of things I mentioned when I say what I do. I had picked up a few regular clients (rather than one-offs, which are pleasant but not a big money-maker) and started getting word-of-mouth referrals. My website and online profiles didn’t mention it. There is perhaps more call overall for these editing services for those of us whose native language is English, but all freelancers can provide similar services for their native language.įor a decade I didn’t market myself for this non-native editing. Many people, especially people with degrees in a technical field like me, provide only that editing service. Non-native editing (also known as ESL editing) for academics who have to publish in English when that is not their native language can of course be a career in itself. That request came through my profile, where I am registered under “English (monolingual)” as well as my main translation pair. Shortly after I started translating I got my first request to edit a chemistry journal article written by an author whose native language was not English. With this in mind, we’ve invited a series of guest authors to write about the diversified service offerings that have helped their businesses to thrive, in the hopes of inspiring you to branch out into the new service offerings that may be right for you!įor as long as I’ve had my freelance business, I have been a translator who is diversified within my narrow area of subject expertise. Diversification can help us hedge against hard times. Offering multiple services in different sectors or to different clients can help steady us when storms come. The Savvy Newcomer team has been taking stock of the past year and finding that one key priority for many freelance translators and interpreters has been diversification. Then, clap your right hand with your partner’s, followed by clapping your own and then clapping left. As you sing, start by clapping your own hands. If you’re not great at remembering rhymes, here’s a fairly easy one with simple claps. The other section includes claps and pats with your partner. The rhyme goes as follows: “Have you ever, ever, ever in your long-legged life, met a long-legged sailor, and his long-legged wife? No, I’ve never, never, never, in my long-legged life, seen a long-legged sailor, and his long-legged wife.” During the long-legged sailor section, arms go from clapping to reaching out to your sides. If Sevens is too much, Long-Legged Sailor could be a better fit. Just know that you can easily master Sevens if you put time into it. It seems complicated, so seeing it in person may also help. The final maneuver before repeating is to hit, cross your hands over, and hit, hit, clap, click, clap, hit. After that, it’s hit, clap, click, hit, clap, click, hit for two rounds. The next move is two rounds of hit, clap, hit, clap, hit, clap, hit. You start by hitting the table seven times. Also, there’s no song or jingle for this one. 1: Make sure to focus on your partner as you complete each motion. It’s a bit more serious and focuses a lot on rhythm. When you’re ready to advance your hand-clapping games, move Sevens to the top of your list. Miss Susie called the lady with the alligator purse.” You might remember this version with the more mellow lines of “Miss Susie called the doctor. Too racy? Don’t fret a tamer version exists. If you disconnect me, I’ll kick you from…’ behind the refrigerator, there was a piece of glass Miss Suzie sat upon it, and it went right up her…” You get the point. The steamboat went to ‘Hello, operator! Please give me number nine. You might even remember all of the lyrics, which start as, “Miss Suzie had a steamboat. Miss Suzie is an irresistible hand-clapping game for kids as it allows them to get very, very close to saying a curse word. If Miss Mary Mack is too dull for you, we recommend the always-entertaining Miss Suzie. Part of the fun is remembering the entire rhyme. You start with your hands crossed around your chest, move them to your thighs, clap your hands together, and then clap the hands of your partner in rhythm. This was one of the most popular hand-clapping games back in the ’80s and ’90s, and it’s still a blast. All dressed in black, with silver buttons all down her back. Pat it and prick it and mark it with ‘B,’ Put it in the oven for baby and me.”) You can change the letter marked to personalize the song for your child. It’s “Patty cake, patty cake, baker’s man. Just be aware, the jingle will be in your head all day. It doesn’t require too many coordinated movements and is great for toddlers. Patty Cake - also known as Pat-A-Cake - is one of the easiest hand-clapping games to start. Here are nine incredible hand-clapping games to practice with your little ones this weekend. However, they can still require a little bit of practice on your end. On the plus side, muscle memory kicks in when you get hand-clapping games started. The only problem is, you may be a bit rusty. Hand clapping games are also a welcomed break from screens and can teach your child a bit about coordination. That means that you can pass them onto your child, too (if you think they’re ready to learn). Hand-clapping games are often passed down from generation to generation, usually with some minor tweaks. Why were they were so amusing? Maybe part of it was feeling like you were in a secret society. If there’s one thing to miss about elementary school, it’s the hand-clapping games. Initial studies of the major peak (peak 2 in Extended Data Fig. We purified human DGAT1 in digitonin, and gel-filtration chromatography revealed two DGAT1-containing peaks, presumably representing different oligomeric states (Extended Data Fig. We determined the structure of DGAT1 by cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). However, DtlB catalyses the transfer of an alanyl moiety to teichoic acid, and therefore its structure provides limited insights into the mechanism of lipid-acylating MBOATs. A crystal structure of DltB, a prokaryotic MBOAT, was reported recently 17. DGAT1 is a polytopic endoplasmic reticulum membrane protein 2,13 with a conserved histidine residue (His415 in human DGAT1) that is probably involved in catalysis 13-16. We investigated DGAT1, a member of the MBOAT family, which includes enzymes that acylate proteins (for example, ghrelin, Wnt and hedgehog) or lipids (for example, DAG and sterols) 12. Despite these insights, the enzymatic mechanism of triacylglycerol synthesis has remained unknown. DGAT1 and DGAT2 have distinct roles in cells 8 and physiology 9,10, but together account for most mammalian triacylglycerol synthesis 11. Both enzymes utilize fatty acyl-CoA and diacylglycerol (DAG) substrates, although DGAT1 has a broader acyl-acceptor substrate specificity 7 (Extended Data Fig. 1a) and DGAT2 enzymes, which belong to different protein families with distinct predicted membrane topologies 6. Mammalian triacylglycerol synthesis is catalysed by DGAT1 (Extended Data Fig. The triacylglycerol biosynthesis pathway was elucidated nearly 60 years ago 5, and the DGAT enzymes were identified more than 20 years ago 2-4. Auricula theatresĪuriculas prefer the cool of outside, but not the wet. She has an auricula theatre, not one lined in black – as you'll see at garden shows – but painted a warm, soft lime wash in a pinky-mushroom colour. I went to visit Mary Keen, the garden designer and writer, who writes for Telegraph Gardening. Because of this I wanted to visit a gardener's collection, rather than a nursery, to work out which are the best stayers and find someone who has been growing auriculas for years – for the pleasure of looking at them, rather than making them new. People tinker with their breeding all the time, coming up with ever more varied colour forms. They are the collector's plant par excellence. Just when you find one you particularly like, it is superseded by another quite similar, said to be a better performer. Pest and Diseases: Slugs, snails, root weevil, root rot, botrytis and powdery mildew can all affect primroses.Auriculas are one of those frustrating groups of plants that are continually evolving. Possible cut flower or rock garden plant. Divide older plants after they finish blooming.Īdditional qualities: Attracts hummingbirds, bees and butterflies. Maintenance: Remove yellowing leaves whenever present. Primula vulgaris is often sold along with pansies as color spots and treated as annuals, but have the potential to be a short lived perennial given the right conditions. Primula malicoides (fairy primrose) and Primula obconica (poison primrose) are delightful early spring annuals. The majority of primroses are perennial in the Portland area. Some species such as Primula japonica and Primula veris are wetland dwellers while others such as Primula auricula are mountain species perfect for the rock garden. They thrive in fertile, well-drained, acidic soil with regular water (except Primulaauricula like alkaline soil). Origin: Around 400 species are found mostly through out the Northern Hemisphere.Ĭulture: Primroses are woodland dwellers that prefer morning sun, dappled sun or full shade. Drop in to see what is new and blooming! Varieties We will have a rainbow of colors and types. Here at Portland Nursery we will be carrying a wide range of Primroses this spring. These types are often grown in pots since they need sharp drainage and lime. They also have distinctive thick leaves with a powdery coating on the underside. This includes Primula auricula which has small clusters of flat topped flowers in a unique range of color. The third group is evergreen and heralds from mountainous areas. This group includes the common primroses sold as color spots. Primula vulgaris and Primula veris) bear bunches of flowers on 6-8” stems and bloom winter and/or early spring. They are often short lived, prefer damp soil and reseed. Primula capita and Primula japonica) show off their flowers in tiered clusters of 6-8 blooms on 1-2 ½ ‘ stems. The many types of primroses are divided into three basic categories. Other species such as Primula japonica and Primula veris reseed and create naturalized drifts in the shade garden. Some species such as Primula marginata are more diminutive and perfect for rock gardens or trough containers. Primroses combine fabulously with spring bulbs, evergreen grasses and dusty miller. An explosion of color in every shade of the rainbow, primroses primarily prefer cooler temperatures and therefore bloom early spring through May. The name Primula is derived from the Italian word for spring primavera. Primroses have been a vibrant addition to the spring, woodland garden and containers for over a century. In this case with this tape deck.the Amazon description does not mention a headphone jack. The amplifier or tuner typically had the headphone jack on it. Ultimately, this means that even though the Senate looks like it would hold less, it can hold 3x more than the Parliament. The Parliament is limited by the single cash strap and overall only provides 2 additional slots over the standard Senate with the pocket strap BEFORE you begin loading cards into it. But I also want to show you how Ekster has worked to ensure that cards placed in the box stay put when in and operate elegantly when they’re coming out, versus a solution that didn’t have as much thought put into it.Ĭoming back to comparisons, as demonstrated in the feature review, what really sets the Senate apart from the Parliament is the larger capacity card carrier. This trigger mechanism is different and would likely have a greater chance of being caught on something in a pocket or purse and breaking off. You might think aluminum is better, but due to construction and size, the proper plastic can actually be more advantageous. I have here a $15 aluminum (not plastic) card slider box. However, not all trigger mechanisms are created equal and why I want to show how the design of the Ekster trigger and slider box are well thought out on all of their products. There are reports that the Ekster triggers have a tendency to break, which while not desired, shouldn’t be unexpected since you’re dealing with technology infused in a wallet. While discussing card slider mechanisms, let’s look first at the trigger. Both wallets received a 4 in the rating for features. (if you want to see all the features and how many cards and cash it can hold, please watch the video)Īt the core of both wallets are card slider mechanisms, the only difference is how card capacity and presentation is built around them, with both being able to store up to 6 non-embossed cards in the box. The Senate pricing while slightly higher than we would have hoped for a product like this (its rating bordered on a 2), was still within acceptable pricing for what we would expect, so it received a 3. The price, the Parliament was is more expensive than the Senate as of this recording, and it received a lower rating of a 2 versus a 3 for the Senate. That is a very subjective observation by us and if it was strictly based on materials, their rating would be the same. With the Senate not trying to show off more leather, it actually looks more balanced thereby increasing quality perception. Whereas, with the Senate, since it’s all attached to the card slider box, conforms to look more like you’d expect. However, by showing more leather on the Parliament, the extreme thinness of the leather was really exposed and it looks cheap. Both wallets use top grain leather sourced from tanneries in Europe, and although the quality of leather may be the same, it’s very thin due to the need to work around the slider box without appearing bulky. For these wallets, it was due to the perception of quality through final presentation. Our quality rating is almost always based on the materials used, construction, etc., but how these materials were applied created a unique outcome. So let’s quickly walk through the differences and why they received their ratings.įor quality, the Senate received a 4, and the Parliament received a 3. When reviewed, the Senate ranked 39 out of 50, while the Parliament rated 31 out of 50. We’ve done individual reviews of both in the past, with links above and also down in the notes We believed it would be useful to put them side by side and determine why there was a disparity in the final rating between them since they appear to be so much the same. Today we’re going to do a comparison between the Ekster Parliament and Senate wallets. And considering its price (free) and how easy it is to download install, what else could you want? Anyhow, shooting penalties is one of the coolest things about soccer. In any case, if you came here looking for a PES or FIFA lookalike, you should try better and forget about searching for cheap alternatives.
